Reading, 'Riting, 'Rithmetic, and Economics? It may not flow off the tip of your tongue, but the 4th R might well be economic Reality. The reality is that without an understanding of economics, today's students won't be prepared for a lifetime of economic decisions. Every Vermont student will be making lifelong decisions about saving, spending, borrowing, and retirement. Good decision making is based on a clear understanding of the choices involved in making those, and any other, decisions. That's what economics is all about.
Economics can be taught to students in any grade - from kindergarten through high school. And in most states in the U.S., it is. Basic economic concepts like scarcity, choice, resources, opportunity costs, the benefits of voluntary exchange, and the role of markets and prices in allocating resources can easily and effectively be taught in elementary, middle, and high schools.
The Vermont Council on Economic Education can assist teachers, principals, superintendents, and school boards in their efforts to insure that Vermont students understand the economic world around them and become successful participants in the local, state, national, and world economies.
